It is one of Bley’s most interesting, if atypical, solo recording.

The excellent piano solo recorded for Red Record portrays a communicative man, affective, at times friendly, even tearful (Up Hill is one of the most moving compositions ever heard in jazz and alone is worth the purchase). In a few instances (Downtown) we find yesterday’s pianist, strongly internalized; and communically, even in the more established pieces, there is often a departure from the original track. But the great discovery is that of a soloist and composer in love with the classicism of jazz: almost a Teddy Wilson version of the 1990s.
