Ernie Smith was a Jamaican singer and songwriter who rose to prominence in the early 1970s, known for blending reggae with softer, melodic pop influences. Skareggae, released in 1981 on Generation Records, sits at the intersection of ska and reggae as the title suggests, reflecting the early 1980s dancehall and roots sounds coming out of Jamaica at the time. Smith had earlier hits like “Duppy or Jumbie” and “Life is Just for Living,” though this Canadian-pressed release represents a later chapter in his recording career.
