Since the release of The Masters Bedroom Is WorthSpending a Night In announced a new loud era (and excepting afew momentary detours into home-baked territoryDog Poisonand Castlemania, for example), Dwyer and company have pummeleda bit harder each time out, cementing their reputation as alive force to be reckoned with and leaving legions sweaty andbruised in the process. Late last year, after years of relentlesslytouring the world, the word got out Dwyers moving to LosAngeles (fear not, still California!) and Thee Oh Sees are takinga much-needed hiatus with a shifting of gears ahead and a newalbum on the way. This is that album.

Drop was recorded in a banana-ripening warehouse (no joke)with hair-farming studio warlock Chris Woodhouse playingdrums; its also graced with the presence of talented gurus MikalCronin, Greer McGettrick and Casafis adding horns andvocals. The result pushes the familiar polarities of the group fartheroutward than ever before. Opener Penetrating Eye mightbe the heaviest Oh Sees song yet, Transparent World and PutSome Reverb On My Brother foam with seasick fuzz, and yetthe ballads, like the harpsichorded Kings Nose and the lushand stately closer The Lens, extend their oeuvre into mellotronic,far-out pop with delicacy and grace.

This schizophrenia heralds the man and the band into an unseenfuture in classic Dwyer fashionrestless energy harnessedinto exquisitely crafted jams, with an emphasis on the pensiveand the paranoid in turns.
