This Canadian Capitol pressing of Cliff Richard’s “It’s All In The Game” captures the British pop icon at a fascinating crossroads in 1964, when he was simultaneously conquering European charts while struggling to gain traction in the North American market. Released during the height of Beatlemania, this album finds Richard adapting his sound to compete with the British Invasion acts that had seemingly displaced him, despite his earlier pioneering role in UK rock and roll. The title track, a reworking of the 1958 Tommy Edwards standard, showcases Richard’s mature vocal approach, while the album’s mix of ballads and uptempo numbers demonstrates his versatility beyond the teen idol image that had defined his late 1950s work.
