Here’s a pressing that deserves more attention from serious collectors – Mason Williams’ debut LP from 1968, featuring the instrumental masterpiece “Classical Gas” that became one of the most recognizable guitar pieces of the era. Williams, who was head writer for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour at the time, crafted an album that bridges folk, classical, and pop sensibilities in ways that still sound fresh today. The title track alone earned him three Grammy Awards and has been covered by everyone from Tommy Emmanuel to Eric Clapton, but the album’s deeper cuts reveal Williams as a sophisticated composer willing to experiment with orchestral arrangements and unconventional song structures.
