Here’s a piece of mid-century easy listening history that deserves more attention than it typically gets. Billy Vaughn’s “Blue Hawaii” from 1959 captures the orchestra leader at his commercial peak, riding the wave of exotica and Hawaiian-themed music that swept America in the late ’50s. Vaughn, who got his start arranging hits for The Hilltoppers, had developed his signature sound by this point those unmistakable saxophone leads floating over lush orchestral arrangements that made him one of Dot Records’ biggest sellers. This album predates Elvis’s famous Hawaiian recordings by several years, representing the more sophisticated, cocktail-lounge approach to island music that was hugely popular before rock and roll completely transformed the landscape.
