Here’s a pressing that doesn’t surface very often the Guarneri Quartet’s 1981 RCA Red Seal recording of Dvok’s Quartet in G, Op. 106. This particular quartet was composed during Dvok’s final period in 1895, just three years before his death, and represents some of his most mature chamber writing. The Guarneri Quartet, formed at Marlboro Music Festival in 1964, had reached their artistic peak by the time of this recording, bringing nearly two decades of ensemble experience to bear on this challenging late work. Their interpretation is notable for its balance of the quartet’s lyrical passages with the more turbulent developmental sections that characterize Dvok’s late style.
