Here’s a Canadian pressing of Styx’s often-overlooked 1976 effort “Crystal Ball” on A&M Records a fascinating transitional album that captures the band right before they hit their commercial stride with “The Grand Illusion.” This was Dennis DeYoung and company’s seventh studio release, showcasing their evolution from the heavier prog-rock sounds of their early 1970s work toward the more theatrical, arena-ready approach that would define their massive late-70s success. The album features some genuinely strong material, including the driving title track and “Lorelei,” which became a solid radio staple and remains a fan favorite to this day.
