The Commodores’ “Live!” captures the band at their absolute peak, recorded during their 1977 tour when they were transitioning from pure funk powerhouse to mainstream soul superstars. This album showcases both sides of their musical personality beautifully – you get the raw, extended funk workouts like “Brick House” and “Easy” alongside their emerging ballad mastery. What makes this recording special is how it demonstrates Lionel Richie’s growing confidence as a frontman while still highlighting the incredible rhythm section that made them Motown’s premier funk unit. The interplay between the horn section and Thomas McClary’s guitar work is particularly fierce on these live cuts, with an energy that their studio albums, polished as they were, couldn’t quite capture.
