Here’s a pressing that serious disco and Motown collectors should take note of Diana Ross’s “The Boss” from 1979 on the Netherlands Motown imprint. This album marked a fascinating pivot point in Ross’s solo career, as she moved away from the lush orchestrations that defined her mid-70s work toward a harder, more contemporary funk and disco sound. The title track became her biggest dance floor anthem, while cuts like “It’s My House” and “Friend to Friend” showcased a grittier, more assertive Diana than fans had previously heard. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic fame handled production duties on several tracks, bringing that distinctive tight, percussive groove that was dominating dance music at the time.
