Here’s a fascinating piece of Cher’s transition period that many collectors overlook her 1971 self-titled album on Kapp Records, pressed right here in Canada. This release captures Cher at a pivotal moment, moving away from the folk-rock sound that defined her Sonny & Cher work and embracing a more diverse, adventurous approach. The album showcases her interpretive skills across a remarkable range of material, from Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” to Neil Young’s “Fire and Rain” (often mistakenly attributed to James Taylor), alongside some surprisingly effective country and pop standards.
